Andrew Plays the Sk-1
“His playing on this generous, sixteen-track release is virtuosic, his enthusiastic engagement equaled by his inspired partners, and the high-wire spirit pervading the faster numbers makes for exciting music.”–Textura
Andrew Lawrence is one of the top-call pianists, keyboardists and organists for live performances and recordings in the Chicago-area. A native of Chicago, Andrew started his classical piano studies at the age of five. After joining the Ravinia Jazz Scholars in high school, Andrew attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and was accepted into the Oberlin Jazz Septet, the school’s top jazz ensemble.
Andrew’s fluidity with classical and jazz piano, in addition to synthesizers and the Hammond Organ, has allowed him to perform with a wide variety of artists in a broad range of styles. He has played with such artists as Makaya McCraven, Greg Ward, Matt Ulery, and Sean Jones and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Andrew led his own sextet at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2022, performing and reinterpreting the music of Keith Jarrett, and in 2024 he performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival with Bonzo Squad and the Sam Mosching Quintet.
Andrew is the resident Hammond Organist for the Heritage Jazz Orchestra, which plays every first Monday of the month at Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago. In addition, Andrew splits his time between the prog rock band District 97, the jazz fusion band Bonzo Squad, the high-octane nine-piece horn band New Nostalgia, the world’s premiere Chrono Trigger cover band Kingdom of Zeal, and the Andrew Lawrence Trio. His debut solo album, “Trialogue,” was released in January 2019, and rose to #8 on the Roots Music Reports jazz charts. His most recent EP “Live at Chicago Electric Piano Company” was released in February 2025.
